Another dimension of Touch:
Awareness, Focus and
Intention (AFI)
Throughout my career as a massage therapist as I have consistently
been receiving massages and bodywork sessions, and taking continuing education
classes. Every once in a while I would observe that an instructor’s or
therapist’s touch was different, extraordinary.
I reasoned that part of this phenomenon could be
explained with passion for the work and advanced training. However, I sensed
that there was more to it than talent and education.
As I progressed with my training in the TRAGER® Approach I experienced this quality of touch more
frequently with instructors and practitioners in advanced classes.
Contemplating the origin of this quality
of touch I came to the conclusion that the secret to this additional dimension
is awareness, focus, and intention with awareness being the first step, the
foundation, and gateway to this special quality of touch.
Self-awareness is the key to being
present and able to focus on the work at hand and instantly perceive responses
from the client’s body. Acting upon these responses with intent can lead us to
the intrinsic cause of a physical issue, resulting in longer lasting changes faster
and more effortlessly.
By shifting awareness to what’s going
on in our own body and mind we can take care of our own potential issues,
resulting in highly effective self-care while we are working and in our daily
life. In TRAGER Approach Mentasics® we address this process extensively.
Like in a moving meditation we gently and playfully move our bodies in a way
that emphasizes effortlessness, softness, freedom, lightness, and joy.
Once we experience this sense of comfort and freedom
in our own body, we are able to be present and work with greater focus. Much of
the relaxation that is happening in the client’s body is achieved by example
through our touch. A gentle, comfortable touch transmits softness and ease to
the muscles and nerves resulting in an almost immediate response from the
client’s body. We are able to perceive the changes in our client’s body as they
are happening, and we can advance with our work directing our attention and
intention accordingly and therefore work more effortlessly, effectively and efficiently.
Once we master self awareness,
awareness of the client’s body, focus, and intention, we find that we can trust
our intuition on where the root of a client’s physical issue lies. This is what
takes our work to a new dimension of excellence and renders longer lasting
results faster. It also allows us to work in a way that is more sustainable for
us as we understand the importance of taking care of our own well-being.
AFI can be applied to any massage and
bodywork modality and to everyday life:
No matter what type of massage
therapy and bodywork we favor, by using Awareness, Focus and
Intention/Intuition our work becomes more focused, purposeful and effective,
effortlessly resulting in faster and longer lasting physical improvements.
Using self-care in our daily life, on
the job and off, allows positive changes in our own bodies to happen. By adding
this method we are not just preventing work related injuries, but we are
potentially allowing our bodies to heal persistent existing physical issues we
may experience.
The TRAGER® Approach to Psychophysical Integration is a gentle,
compassionate modality that (re)educates the body-mind being to function on a
more effective, yet effortless level.
